    Candace's Corner of The World

In reminiscing about Orange essential oil, one big memory is my class in 1998 at Purdue University, an International Study in Advanced Aromatherapy. Each of us was required to present a paper to complete the course. Being from Florida at the time, I thought Orange Oil would be a good choice. It also meant I could go on a fun field trip, if I could find a place in Florida that processed Orange Oil.

Well, this was a challenge since the orange business in Florida is mainly about selling the fruit, juice, and concentrate. But belief, prayer, and persistence paid off. I found a processing plant near La Belle that arranged for me to have a personal tour of the whole operation. What a gift and fun day!

Most essential oils are steam distilled which is a fairly simple process that has been around since mankind started playing with fire and water. Citrus oils go through a more complex process of being cold pressed, separated, and centrifuged.

The Orange originated in China, and the tree came to Florida with the Spanish. The Native Americans continued the cultivation. The tree is such a gift of Good Medicine, giving us the fruit as a healthy food full of vitamin C and natural fiber, and three essential oils for pleasure and health. Sweet Orange oil is cold pressed from the fruit (the most popular of the oils). Petitgrain comes from the distillation of the leaves and twigs (often used in skin and hair products). Exquisite Neroli comes from the Orange Blossom and is a favorite in perfumes. From food to aromas...there is so much to enjoy!

    What's On YOUR Mind?

So... what to do with Orange essential oil? It brings a sweetness to wherever it roams.

To simply enjoy and benefit from the aroma...carry around a little 4 ml. bottle of the pure oil for inhalation, put some on a cotton ball to keep with you, or use in a diffuser. To rub on the skin, combine with a base oil (like Organic Golden Jojoba). Keep it at a 1 to 2% dilution.

Orange and Lavender are a wonderful combination to use in a diffuser or combine in a blend. These are favorite aromas of most people. Good to use in your office or home. They are welcoming, warming and comforting....a safe place to be.

    Sweet Orange

Whenever we pass around Orange Oil in my classes, memories of Christmas time are always among the "nose-brain" connections. Helen Keller said: "Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived."

For most people the pure aroma of genuine Orange Oil is pleasant and makes them smile. The sweet and nurturing effect, warms the heart and soothes the emotions. I call Orange the "Natural Tranquilizer". However, one of the lessons essential oils teach us is to honor the individuality in all of us. Even though the natural chemistry of Orange Oil is calming...one man in class, wrinkled up his nose and groaned "Oh, I hate this." He was brought up in an orange grove in Avon Park, Florida, and his father "made" him pick oranges. So as Helen Keller said, it transported him across many miles and years. We took the Orange away from him immediately and gave him Lavender.

We need all the nurturing and comfort we can get in this day and age. This is why I include Orange in the top five essential oils in The Good Medicine Tin®. It is good for calming stress and anxiety, slowing us down, and aids digestion and sleep. Children love it. Orange is in our OLA #3 Blend with Lavender and Peppermint. This is good for belly rubs, and calming massages...children too. Orange, in our Precious Christmas Oil formula, adds a sweet touch to the Pine, Cinnamon and Clove. Sugar and spice...and everything nice!

Orange (and all citrus oils) should not be used straight on the skin. It can burn sensitive skin. Use it straight in a diffuser or on a cotton ball. Always combine it in a base, like Organic Golden Jojoba, to apply to the skin.

Orange is one of the most agreeable aromas. Use it in a diffuser in your room, car and office. May you add sweetness to your holiday environment, today and everyday.
